Transit Driver applicants that have filled out an online application will need to also take and pass a written test prior to the interview process.  After we have received your application you will be contacted to schedule a written test. Tests occur at the CyRide facility:

About

• No driving experience needed; get paid $20.79 per hour while we train you to get your Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and to drive safely ($21.47 per hour after 7/1/2024)
• Perfect job for university students or semi-retired persons
• CyRide drivers that are Iowa State University students have priority over other classmates in your grade when registering for classes
• Work between 15 - 35 hours per week (you build your own schedule)
• CyRide staff trains drivers to obtain their class B Commercial Drivers License (pre-trip vehicle inspection test, skills test and driving test)
• CyRide drivers provide transportation to over 6 million passengers in Ames each year
• Articulated (60-foot) buses hold approximately 110 passengers each while large (40-foot) buses accommodate approximately 60-65 passengers
• Flexible schedule (tell us when you're available to work; guaranteed time off for exams or school related issues)

Job Requirements

• Good driving record (no more than two accidents or moving violations the last three years)
• Must be able to pass a written exam, interview and obtain Commercial Driver's Permit.  CyRide's Trainers will help you with the knowledge and skills needed to pass required exams.
  Learn how to obtain your CLP (General CDL Knowledge test, Air Brake Endorsement, Passenger Endorsement.   An interactive study guide for the written CDL test is available on mobile devices through iOS and Android app stores, as well as online. This guide is free to anyone with an Iowa driver’s license or ID card.

• Must be able to pass a DOT physical
• Must be able to pass a drug screen
• Must be at least 18 years old

Transit Driver Starting Wage (Part-Time)

• $21.47 per hour + $1,000 hiring bonus (paid in three installments)
  
  • $25.63 per hour after 3,120 hours worked (B Step)
  • $27.70 per hour after 8,320 hours worked (C Step)
