Moonlight Express offers a FREE, safe ride anywhere within the Ames city limits on Friday and Saturday nights between 10:30 pm to 2:30 am. This service operates when Iowa State University is in session. Moonlight Express does not operate during the summer.

Moonlight Express has two dedicated routes with timetables that operate between west Ames and Campustown and between Frederiksen Ct. and campus.  For all other areas of the Ames community, CyRide operates on-demand. View all Moonlight Express service maps (PDF or LIVE).  Individual maps of shuttle services can be viewed below.

Moonlight Express does not run on the following weekends:
  • Friday/Saturday after Thanksgiving
  • Friday/Saturday in January before classes start for spring
  • Friday/Saturday of Easter weekend
  • Friday/Saturday of Finals Week in May
  • Summer
  • Iowa State Breaks during fall/spring semesters
    • Semester Break (December 21, 2024 - January 20, 2025))
    • Spring Break (March 15-23, 2025)
Moonlight Express Background
Moonlight Express was started in 1984 and was entirely funded through ISU student fees until January 1998, when the City of Ames and Iowa State University joined in the funding.  For more details on ridership and expenses, view the excel file below.
